World Class Vision and a Benefit to All

The Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine captures a unique balance of world class research in animal and public health, high quality learning experiences and cutting-edge medical care, all with a family-like atmosphere.

Our passion is to improve the health and well-being of animals for the benefit of the animals, their owners, agribusiness, biomedical research and, thus, society. We achieve our vision by providing compassionate, world-class health care and diagnostic services and by conducting translational veterinary research (bench to clinic). We further realize our vision, in part, by investing ourselves in training students and veterinary professionals and encouraging them to embrace and perpetuate our vision. We are driven to accomplish these goals by the knowledge that our calling will better the life of society and the animals entrusted to our care.

The MSU CVM professional curriculum provides courses leading to the doctor of veterinary medicine degree (DVM), which is a four-year curriculum. Graduate programs of study offered in the College lead to the MS or PhD degree in selected areas of specialization. We began offering an undergraduate program in veterinary medical technology in 2010, and the first class with a BS degree graduated in the spring of 2012.

Responsibility & Trust
Our History

Since the day the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine opened its doors, we have made it our responsibility to provide a higher standard of living not just for animals and those involved with their care, but for all people. As technology and medicine advance, so does MSU CVM. We are committed to our goals and will continue to invest in Mississippi and the region, improving education, health and economic viability, as well as continue to do our part to make an important and lasting impact throughout the nation and the world.

MSU CVM was established by the Mississippi Legislature in 1974. The physical plant in Starkville (Wise Center/main campus) was built in phases comprised of an educational/ instruction wing, the Animal Health Center and a research wing. The Warm Water Aquaculture Research and Diagnostic Laboratory in Stoneville and the Poultry Research and Diagnostic Laboratory in Pearl became part of the College in 1992 and 2000, respectively. The Mississippi Veterinary Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (MVRDL), the reference laboratory of the Mississippi Diagnostic Laboratory System, became part of the College by act of the Mississippi Legislature in 2002. A not-for-profit (509 (a) 2) corporation, Mississippi Veterinary Clinical Outreach Services, which operates two clinics: Animal Emergency & Referral Center in Flowood and Veterinary Specialty Center in west Starkville, began operations in 2010.

The College’s first class of students was admitted fall of 1977 and graduated in May of 1981. We are one of 30 accredited colleges of veterinary medicine in the United States and have been fully accredited by the Council on Education of the American Veterinary Medical Association since 1981.

Today MSU CVM is comprised of three main academic departments and an office of research, all under the oversight of College Administration: Department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences, Department of Clinical Sciences, Department of Pathobiology and Population Medicine, and the Office of Research and Graduate Studies
